Marriage and my Vows, and what it means to me.

Marriage and my Vows

From John Lennox’s book, ‘God’s Undertaker – Has science buried God?’ – p. 40,41
“Let us imagine that my Aunt Matilda had baked a beautiful cake and we take it along to be analyzed by a group of the world’s top scientists. I, as master of ceremonies, ask them for an explanation of the cake and they go to work. The nutrition scientists will tell us about the number of calories in the cake an its nutritional effect; the biochemists will inform us about the structure of the proteins, fats etc. in the cake; the chemists, about the elements involved and their bonding; the physicists will be able to analyze the cake in terms of fundamental particles; and the mathematicians will no doubt offer us a set of elegant equations to describe the behavior of those particles.

Now that these experts, each in terms of his or her scientific discipline have given us an exhaustive description of the cake, can we say that the cake is completely explained? We have certainly been given a description of how the cake was made and how its various constituent elements relate to each other, but suppose I now ask the assembled group of experts a final question: Why was the cake made? The grin on Aunt Matilda’s face shows she knows the answer, for she made the cake, and she made it for a purpose. But all the nutrition scientists, biochemists, chemists, physicists and mathematicians in the world will not be able to answer the question – and it is no insult to their disciplines to state their incapacity to answer it. Their disciplines, which can cope with questions about the nature and structure of the cake, that is, answering the ‘how’ questions, cannot answer the ‘why’ questions connected with the purpose for which the cake was made. In fact, the only way we shall ever get an answer is if Aunt Matilda reveals it to us. But if she does not disclose the answer to us, the plain fact is that no amount of scientific analysis will enlighten us.”

—–

If there is anything worth learning, it’s that we DO NOT know everything, and no single system of understanding will EVER give us such knowledge. The above example stuck to my mind as I was about to be married, not only as a powerful refutation to the validity of scientism (” the dogmatic endorsement of scientific methodology and the reduction of all knowledge to only that which is measurable”), but I was imagining someone attempting to give such a comprehensive explanation of my love and commitment, laying it all out…in the hopes of removing any spirituality behind it, just trying to make it all physics and biology…just imagine this: A man in a nice suit shows up, a very well educated person who just ran all of the correct tests on the subject, and he’s going to break it all down for me and explain every physical molecule and how they moved and interacted to make this all possible, and the thought made me want to laugh. How much more mysterious, complex and glorious is this human life, and so much more then what we give it credit.

Marichu and I was married on October 5th and we are now a happier couple. Personal Vows were exchanged. Shiny gold rings now adorn us, and I kissed my lovely bride with a mild tipping motion which officially sealed it.

I think about what this all means, these VOWS we give during a wedding in particular…and the first thing that seems obvious about any marriage, (regardless of it’s actual love-content) is that a person gets to have less taxes taken out of their paycheck, as the law recognizes me as a married man (cool, I guess, but not motivating at all to me as a REASON to marry)…beyond the legal ramifications involved in no longer being ‘single’ according to the law, what does this union of two lives really mean? In particular, Why do we humans take the time to give vows at all? Certainly these deep assurances being spoken are already understood at some point during the relationship, in order for it to be agreed that we should be standing there in the first place, getting married, and words can hardly be considered the most reliable and sincere vehicle of human intention (as the saying goes: “put your money where your mouth is”), and not all (I’d guess very few) people cling to HONESTY as an actual Principle..it’s something you “try” to live up to, sure…because like the golden rule, “you treat others as you would have them treat you back”, (but only when the risk is low enough) …certainly for most HONESTLY is not something so important you’d do virtually anything to avoid damaging it, but yet here we are, getting married and speaking the most meaningful words we can bring forth in our life that we have ever spoken (and getting very emotional over them), to that one special person that completes us. We make bold promises about our future, hoping against all odds that our ability to be honest IS seriously valued by our special someone as something more than a pragmatic “best attempt”.

Most people highly regard the sincerity and integrity in others (even those that lack it them-self), and they do so regardless if such things are weighed against any divine judgment that can later make amends of any falsehoods, or by weighing it more tenuously against the opinions of men/women they respect; but there is something about words so wrought (in VOWS) that brings about a very profound trust that as human beings, we can rise above the base animal-physical-mammalian level of merely existing, procreating, evolving, exploiting for gain, etc.. so much so that perhaps even the most adamant materialist among us can for a moment experience something akin to the non-physical (God), something transcending the “random unguided/undirected process of life” that is so blindly (pun-intended) championed by such a purely humanistic person. As humans we enjoy much phenomena that exists beyond mere physicality, these experiences and choices that MAKE us distinctly human are not something any other creature can partake in. Human choices and relationships not driven by a blind mechanical process, but rather a designed, intelligent, intentional one. What OUGHT TO BE (vs. what IS) is not easily decided by those that would demand and insist to measure it with their already intelligently-designed instruments before coming to terms with the answer.

Any methodological human system (science, philosophy, religion, etc) that is divorced from the entire scope of humanity and it’s experiences (and ALL that it includes, EX: that data which falls outside of it’s purview), will never be able to prove or explain my love and my conviction to Marichu on our wedding day, of how much she matters to me, of what this commitment we are making means; forever these things are powerfully subjectively mine and uniquely human. Because I have come to accept there is something higher, something more perfect, something of which my perfection tries to mimic and clearly never WILL match (at least in this life) as a standard for myself, this will motivate me and inspire me to continue to improve myself for her, and for us. Our willingness to make such vows during a ceremony and subject it to the criticisms and evaluation of others, all while existing in a less than stellar level of perfection than the ideals we hope to achieve, acts as a promise to one another (in the most sincere way) that we believe it’s possible to exceed what it means to be human, and any limits the world or others would place upon us in the future; and I believe that level of excellence is worth fighting for.

Wedding Vows

these are vows I spoke to Marichu on Oct 5th, 2013, they are what I’m fighting for, and always will:
“How do I express the depth of my heart for you with mere words, to speak so briefly and somehow do it justice? It’s just that I know how easy it is to merely say words of love and commitment, how little effort it takes a person to merely open their mouth and form words, but…

My love, if ever the strength of my words should be lacking, now or years from now; or if my ability to even speak someday be compromised, I vow that my heart would still beat just for you, and as strong as it does right now, standing here, in the witness of God and family, and friends, and I vow to you that it will never fail to find its most sincere expression, in some way, perhaps where words can be discarded as useless or irrelevant, because whether it be in light or darkness, in sunshine or rain; I vow that THIS love will always be for you, and you alone.

Even if the world should crumble around us, I vow that I will commit myself to keeping us both safe in the arms of God, always focused on our joy and passion, always aiming for greater sincerity and truth. My resolve to love you, protect you, keep you, and to cherish you every day of your life is beyond reproach. I vow with not only these words, but also with every deed of my life from this day forward, that I will stay true in my love to you, until my very last breath, and if God would see fit, if He would bless me so abundantly yet again, I will find you even when all the lights go out, to continue loving you beyond death, even beyond time itself.

I have been blessed to learn from a wisdom far, far greater than my own, a profound truth, and that truth is this: that, Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails, and I vow that our love will never fail.

All of this and so much more I vow to you, my only love. Now, and forever. ”

I love you Marichu!

Music Tracks – Some of my favorite songs using the metaphor of: FIRE

Some of my favorite songs using the metaphor of:

Some of my favorite songs using the metaphor of fire, image from confluencecapitalpartners.com

FIRE

The primal natural force that is at the heart of our very existence. From the sun above us, to the many billions of stars that we can see and never touch; forever to be used as a symbolic representation of love (“‘I’d give the stars to you”) and it’s the reason we conquered the darkness of ancient nights, long before we reached the level of technological advancement to flip a light switch or a heater on (avoiding real flames), fire’s warmth kept us alive to survive the most bitter nights; as a fireplace at home, a campfire during the respite of our travels, or a torch lit to show us the path through the most treacherous paths. it’s power is undeniable and its necessity for life, inescapable.

Fire’s red signature color is the color of passion, and it’s no mistake that our lips and tongue are faded imitations of it’s true deepness.  A depth we struggle to embrace with our love and passions.

The following songs represent my personal favorite songs that use fire, and similar expressions (‘flames’, ‘fiery’, ‘burning’, ‘heat’, etc…) so well. The songs here are each worthy of full reviews as I’ve done for other tracks on my page, and a couple already have such reviews (they are noted)…and most of these will have such a treatment done, later at some point.

For me, these are fantastic songs that capture both the scope of fire’s awesome destructive power, but also it’s more subtle ability (as a metaphor) to leave a profound mark on those so afflicted by the touch of it’s flame.

(not ranked in any particular order of personal fondness, except for what I think works well as a playlist.)

Enjoy these Music Tracks and lyrics!

1.  Song: Song Reckless Burning
Artist: Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter

Lyrics:

Pretty thing, I’ve got you
Right where I used to be
We ride across this city
Starting fires recklessly

And everything is closing
But tonight, we’ll stay awhile
And if this darkness lingers
I’ll fall to you just like a child

Pretty thing, I’ve got you
Right where this trouble lands
With reckless burning
I have been charged again

Goodnight, Irene

2.  Song: Set Fire to the Rain
Artist: Adele

Lyrics:

I let it fall, my heart,
And as it fell you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

My hands, they’re strong
But my knees were far too weak,
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet

But there’s a side to you
That I never knew, never knew.
All the things you’d say
They were never true, never true,
And the games you play
You would always win, always win.

But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

When I lay with you
I could stay there
Close my eyes
Feel you here forever
You and me together
Nothing is better

‘Cause there’s a side to you
That I never knew, never knew,
All the things you’d say,
They were never true, never true,
And the games you’d play
You would always win, always win.

But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
When it fell, something died
‘Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time!

Sometimes I wake up by the door,
That heart you caught must be waiting for you
Even now when we’re already over
I can’t help myself from looking for you.

I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

I set fire to the rain,
And I threw us into the flames
When it fell, something died
‘Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time, ohhhh!

Oh noooo
Let it burn, oh
Let it burn
Let it burn

3.  Song: Burnin’ for you
Artist: Blue Oyster Cult

Lyrics:

Home in the valley
Home in the city
Home isn’t pretty
Ain’t no home for me

Home in the darkness
Home on the highway
Home isn’t my way
Home will never be

Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I can’t see no reason to put up a fight
I’m living for giving the devil his due

And I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you

Time is the essence
Time is the season
Time ain’t no reason
Got no time to slow

Time everlasting
Time to play b-sides
Time ain’t on my side
Time I’ll never know

Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I’m not the one to tell you what’s wrong or what’s right
I’ve seen suns that were freezing and lives that were through

Well I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you

Burn out the day
Burn out the night
I can’t see no reason to put up a fight
I’m living for giving the devil his due

And I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you
I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you

4.  Song: Grapevine Fires
Artist: Death Cab for Cutie

Lyrics:

When the wind picked up
And the fire spread
And the grapevines seemed left for dead.
And the northern sky, looked like the end of day,
The end of days.

The wake up call to a rented room
Sounded like an alarm of impending doom.
To warn us it’s only a matter of time.
Before we all burn
Before we all burn
Before we all burn
Before we all burn.

We bought some wine and some paper cups
Near your daughter’s school when we picked her up
And drove to a cemetery on a hill,
On a hill.

Watched the plumes paint the sky gray
As she laughed and danced through the field of graves
There I knew it would be alright
That everything would be alright,
Would be alright
Would be alright
Would be alright
Would be alright.

And the news reports on the radio
Said it was getting worse
As the ocean air fanned the flames.
But I couldn’t think of anywhere I would have rather been
To watch it all burn away,
To burn away.

The firemen worked in double shifts,
With prayers for rain on their lips,
And they knew it was only a matter of time.

5.  Song: In Your Room
Artist: Depeche Mode

Lyrics:

In your room
Where time stands still
Or moves at your will
Will you let the morning come soon
Or will you leave me lying here
In your favourite darkness
Your favourite half-light
Your favourite consciousness
Your favourite slave

In your room
Where souls disappear
Only you exist here
Will you lead me to your armchair
Or leave me lying here
Your favourite innocence
Your favourite prize
Your favourite smile
Your favourite slave

I’m hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here
In your room
Your burning eyes
Cause flames to arise
Will you let the fire die down soon
Or will I always be here
Your favourite passion
Your favourite game
Your favourite mirror
Your favourite slave

I’m hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here

Lyrics:

take your hands away from your face
so i can see everything you are
and everything you used to be
you used to be to me
something you dont wanna be, i know.

you, you’re like the sun
and i am earth
together we’re one
but someday
your fire will die
and i’ll grow cold
without sunlight.
and i will freeze, baby
i will die, i’d freeze, i’d die for you.

things, they always die
just give it time.
but we, someday we’ll see
our love will shine,
our love will shine.

your love wont fade, darling.
lover, i cannot do this alone
things like this are better off untold
someday the sun will die and i’ll grow cold
i hope someday your love finds it’s way home.

(cause you are the sun and i am the earth)

7.  Song: Your Heart is an Empty Room
Artist: Death Cab for Cutie

Lyrics:

Burn it down ’til the embers smoke on the ground
And start new when your heart is an empty room
With walls of the deepest blue

Home’s face
How it ages when you’re away
And spring blooms and you find a love that’s true
But you don’t know what now to do
‘Cause the chase is all you know and she stopped running months ago

And all you see is where else you could be when you’re at home
And out on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone

The flames and smoke climbed out of every window
And disappeared with everything that you held dear
But you shed not a single tear
For the things that you didn’t need
‘Cause you knew you were finally free

‘Cause all you see is where else you could be when you’re at home
And there on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone

9.  Song: Slow Dancing in the Burning Room
Artist: John Mayer

Lyrics:

It’s not a silly little moment
It’s not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dyin’ breath of
This love we’ve been workin’ on

Can’t seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms
Nobody’s gonna come and save you
We pulled too many false alarms

We’re goin’ down
And you can see it too
We’re goin’ down
And you know that we’re doomed
My dear
We’re slow dancing in a burnin’ room

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it’s nothing to me
Baby, you’re the only light I ever saw

I’ll make the most of all the sadness
You’ll be a bitch because you can
You try to hit me, just hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
‘Cause you can’t understand

Go cry about it, why don’t you
Go cry about it, why don’t you
Go cry about it, why don’t you

My dear, we’re slow dancin’ in a burnin’ room
Burnin’ room, burnin’ room

Don’t you think we outta know by now?
Don’t you think we shoulda learned somehow?
Don’t you think we outta know by now?
Don’t you think we shoulda learned somehow?
Don’t you think we outta know by now?
Don’t you think we shoulda learned somehow?

My dedication to Marichu on Valentine’s Day (last one before I am married)

My dedication to Marichu on Valentine’s Day

1 Corinthians 13:4–8a – Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. (NKJV)

My love Marichu; my wonderful Cutiechu!  Happy Valentine’s Day!!  The next one will be AMAZING and we will be spending it together, not 7500 miles apart from each other! Woohoo!

Do you realize that today is the final Valentine’s Day that we have to endure being unmarried and apart?  It will be a condition never to (willingly) repeat itself in our lifetimes!

This dedication is for you and only you (in spirit), and yet for all others to read (in words)  if they should ever bother, and I do it this way, if for no other reason than to have it be a witness; to devote the content of this dedication with sincerity, so it can serve to be a judgement of my character. Let this be a record to be testified in due time, not only to the minds of everyone in the world who may have cause to see it (or even through sheer circumstance), but more importantly let it be a promise to your precious heart, of which is the most inspiring and unique (of anybody’s heart) and hence the most valuable thing I can hope to ever dedicate this toward.

Even though I am alone on this Valentine’s Day, I celebrate that there will be no more fruitless searching for a woman who shares my values and my principles. No more fumbling around for a woman I can share my sometimes jaded soul and frustrated mind, but rather that I have found where I can rest these things with great peace and trust, knowing they will be tempered and soothed by her incredible benevolence; I celebrate that, even though I am so far from you this day, I have all of this in you; and I will devote the remainder of my life (however long or short it is) to us, without the slightest regret, because I know that somehow, against all odds, it was always going to be you, and only you that I was meant to spend every Valentine’s Day with, and even though it’s a shame we missed so many years together; that we focused on irrelevant things (and people) before we met, we will simply have to make up for lost time baby 🙂

You are too great of a reward for me that I should live with ANY past regrets. I take any of the past “happier” days in my earlier years, Valentine’s Day and otherwise, and they were nothing but dust compared to time spent with you, and because you are aren’t to be found in those past memories, they are worthless to me! I am so excited toward our future together!

It is with a love exactly like the one quoted above, taken from the Bible, (my favorite verse concerning love ever put to press) so eloquent and profoundly ideal as it is; that I shall rest my will and my heart concerning you; I will trust in your faithful embrace; in your capable hands, forever confident that the hopes and desires we both feel for each other will endure throughout the years, and that your small hands can hold my heart more strongly than any other. Your innocence and your compassion, and your selfless ability to forgive and love, truly humble me, and I am reminded of an earlier verse than the one above, one that sadly it seems most believers in God have all but twisted beyond recognition in their hearts, their minds and their “religious” doctrines:

1Cr 13:2  And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

I hope and pray that I can somehow live up to these amazing standards of love with you, and that no knowledge (about anything), or amount of “faith” (in anything) will ever blind me from showing how much I love and appreciate you, everything you do for me and those you love, everything you believe, and every smile you warm my life with. You are the sun to my earth, as you are the light to my darkness.  Now, and forevermore.

I love you my sweet Valentine!

Album Review – Moving Mountains – Pneuma

Moving Mountains – Pneuma

Pneuma Cover

Pneúma – properly, spirit (Spirit), wind, or breath.

After reviewing the track Sol Solis (my favorite song from this album), I decided to take a small break and come back swinging with a full album review.  This is only my second album review, my first being for my favorite album of all time… What better way to resume my deepest thoughts (and subsequent ramblings) about music I consider to be GREAT than to review THIS album, which as mentioned in my previous song review I consider to be near the very top of quality in post-rock artist releases…both for it’s musicianship and lyrics, but mostly because it’s so damn emotional and I find that it substitutes what is so often overly-wrought music-masturbation in post-rock, for a much more direct and raw intensity, one that is still impressive in it’s style, but unfettered by sheer complexity.  It’s gives much weight to the album and to every song individually.

This is no doubt a concept album, in that the entire work from it’s start to finish (the last song ends with the same sounds that kick off the album, forming a near perfect loop) tells a story, or a series of like stories, vaguely and metaphorically using the ‘sun’, the ‘earth’, ‘trees’, etc…images that invoke a sense of nature and in a profound way, a sense of enduring.  A relationship, a life, a hope….all of these things are invoked and cloaked under these metaphors and the albums consistent usage of these images really make it a powerful experience to anyone who really takes the time to listen, listen loudly and perhaps study the lyrics while listening, because as the music and singing style lends itself, much of it can be hard to pick up by just listening to it, and even though you will feel the emotion and the passion in the singers voice and cries, it becomes much more powerful if you make explicit what is being said by following along… The lyrics are both beautiful for their simplicity and sincerity as they are for their deep introspection…these are poetic words not nailed down as a specific concrete meaning for others to spoon feed them-self if agreed with and discarded if not, but rather they are powerfully and personally PRIVATE, meant to thought about and felt by each listener and interpreted by YOU, the listener.  If you liken the sun to being the most important things in your life and yourself as being the ‘earth’, what would you do (and what DO you do) to preserve that precious light, and how would you feel when it finally sets?  What if it, by some unforeseen circumstance it doesn’t rise again?

Despite the sorrow and desperation that hangs over much of this album, it really concludes on a powerfully positive note, a sort of reconciliation between the ‘sun’ and the ‘earth’, and if not a complete victory, then at least a warm and honest acceptance of the state of things, and the future joys we experience…CAN experience, after much suffering.  It ends beautiful in much the same way it starts instrumentally too, ending with the most private, expressive (concerning emotion) and exclusive instrument of all of them; the human voice.

1. Aphelion

“There are two instrumentals on this album, and this isn’t one of them, although it comes very close to being a third, with only 3 lines in it, making it the shortest song lyrically.  Starting with the sound of a couple breaths before any words are sung, it then explodes into probably some of the most intense screaming on the album, This song quickly and effectively sets the tone of the album musically (not as much vocally, as the screaming becomes less and less intense and pronounced as the album progresses as if to say “I accept this is happening, I accept that I am powerless to avoid what’s happening, I will relax now…not always, but more often now…”, at least that’s how I see it….This album starts with an intensity of feelings too raw and primal to be expressed in any other way besides such vocal passion and it’s to be understood soon…”

LYRICS:

And that’s the fire in the sun
And that’s the fire in the sky

We’re so far away from home (x2)

2. Cover the roots, lower the stems

“The meaning of this song was explained on another site by the singer himself as:

(One of my closest friends had passed away. And being young and not really experienced like that, that was one of the more crippling things that had ever happened to me. So I sort of took a break from pretty much everything that was going on in my life, including recording Pneuma. And Nick really had to motivate me to get myself to finish it. And then when I came back to finish the record, Cover was born out of that.)

For anyone who has ever lost such a close friend, this song can really hit home…I love the line “how your soul lives in my own” and how the ending of it is so bright and promising toward the now gone friend, despite how sad the song is.  Powerful in it’s moments of screaming (as if against the hand of fate) and it’s moments of silence and relative calm before the song really explodes from the 1:34 mark and the 2:20 mark….LOVE IT.

LYRICS:

You know it’s really hard to do
To think of anyone but you
And how your soul lives in my own

Because the trees are growing roots
That will hold your heart
Inside your chest where you lay

Fear, fear no more, my son
Because someday the trees will sing
And I know that someday will come
Where the trees are growing roots
Among the place we used to sit and breathe the air

Someday
And someday the trees will sing
Oh, my god
My heart is with you now
And your body is growing roots
That will hold your feelings down
And I will sing a song for you
Where a thousand pandas dance
Under the warmth and ocean blue

3. Alastika

“Love the ping-pong panning of the guitars starting at the 0.34 mark…more importantly I love how the song captures the futility of an immature love, or perhaps simply a relationship that is doomed in general…there is a moment in the middle of the song of reckless rebellion when the voice arises for the first time clear and understandable…an unwillingness to let go of each other despite all odds, but as the singer finally acknowledge at the end, you can’t fight  nature’s course…”But did you think you’d grow beyond me? the clouds exclaimed”.  How true that is and yet the final line is still “Just run away”! how we must get dragged so hard into the mud, and soaked in the rains to notice we are wet and chilled with a cold or scraped and dirty…. How bitterly true how often we learn the most important things through hindsight, and after so much regret.”

LYRICS:

You are something, something to hold onto
A fault in the crust where I fell through
You live and you learn, but you still love
Nothing will change what I’m made of (x2)

We’ll run away
Just run away
Just run away and find a way
We’ll run away

“But did you think you’d grow beyond me?”
The clouds exclaimed
Just run away

4. Fourth

“This is the first of two instrumentals on this album, appropriately enough named ‘Fourth’ being the 4th album on the track, both of the instrumentals are very small, and this is my favorite of the two…it’s quite beautiful, with an elegant piano, a heart-beat drum beat, and soft guitar sweeps likened to strings….a nice mellow track to set the mood calm and serene for the next magnum opus of a track.”

5. 8105

“Continuing the cloud theme from the previous track, this song is the longest on the album, right at the mid-way point and it features female vocals (which makes sense because of the “running away” a sort of separation in the last track, and as she sings an alternate verse, these lyrics will feature much the same words/phrases that will be used in the following tracks too…for me the song expresses at the same time the sheer closeness of being with someone you love, that feeling of being inseparable and at the same time, a realization of sharp distinction, she is “in the sky”, he is “in the earth”, how can these two things be as one?  the answer? They cannot….hence the remaining lyrics on the album…at least that’s the case until the end….”

LYRICS:

And we will fall back into the ocean

The mountain tops are hard to see
They tell how far you really are from me
The clouds are thick
But they can’t hide you
They can’t hide you from me

Some things are…
Some things are here to kill me
Can you feel it now?
We’re burning up
Amongst your flames
Amongst your love, our life

You’re like the sun (I am in the earth)
And I am earth
Together we’re one (It’s where you’ll find me)
But someday your fire will die
And I’ll grow cold without sunlight

And I will freeze, baby (You, you’re in the sky)
I will die (It’s where you’ll find me)
I’d freeze
I’d die for you

One thing I know you didn’t know was how to
Fall head first hand in hand into the ocean blue
We count down, take a breath, and jump
We’re falling
You scream: “Baby, we’re simply growing!”
I think, baby, I wouldn’t mind to die like this

I may not say everything that’s on my mind
I am in the earth
It’s where you’ll find me
You’re in the sky
From you

Don’t fret, baby, we’re simply growing
And my darling, I wouldn’t mind to die like this
Don’t fret, baby, we’re simply growing
Don’t fret, babe, the sun is coming

6. Bottom Feeder

“This is the second of two instrumentals on this album, the name of it invoking the ocean, both of the instrumentals are very small, and this one is the most serene and sleepy of them, capturing the depth and calm stillness of water and it leads nicely into the next track.  Note how both him and her were diving “into the Ocean Blue”, well this seems to be the result…. If I had to chose my least favorite track on the album, it would be this one, but only because the rest of them are so great, and this one, as calm and relaxing as it, just can’t compare.”

7. Sol Solis

“Clicking the link above will take you to my full review of this song where you can play the song as well…I can’t say much more here except that it’s my favorite track on this album, a humble acoustic number amongst giants of powerful sweeping electric guitar and bombastic drums, of which all are missing here, and yet it’s as powerful and sincerely created as any good music gets, and it really strikes a cord with me….it’s the moment in the “story” when everything really is falling apart, and even so, a small hope is expressed, in my favorite moment in the entire album, the line “I hope someday your love finds it’s way home.” right before the mournful horns start, again so many of the lyrics repeat from the lines started in ‘8105’ typing in closely with the way the cycles of the earth and sun repeat….and will continue to do so as the album progresses…”

LYRICS:

Take your hands away from your face
So I can see everything you are
And everything you used to be
You used to be to me
Something you don’t want to be, I know

You, you’re like the sun
And I am earth
Together we’re one
But someday your fire will die
And I’ll grow cold without sunlight

And I will freeze, baby
I will die
I’d freeze
I’d die for you

Things, they always die
Just give it time
They always die
But we, someday we’ll see
Our love will shine
Our love will shine

Your love won’t fade, darling
Lover, I cannot do this alone
Things like these are better off untold
Someday the sun will die and I’ll grow cold
I hope someday your love finds its way home

‘Cause you are the sun
And I am the earth
You are the sun and I…

8. Growing on, Growing up, Growing out

“Continuing the growing theme from all the non-instrumental tracks 2, 3, 5 and 7, this song is one of my favorites on the album and after so much build up for this song and this album in general, This song explodes with the first shining moment of joy, and it’s expressed in the line “And I can see that the sun is truly in love with me”, gives me such a warm and positive vibe, in contrast to the overall melancholy of the album.  I love this song.

LYRICS:

Oh, God
What the fuck is going on with me and everyone?
It’s you and me
Someday we’ll see the end

[hard to understand part]
(Someday we’ll see…do you feel it, the fire?)

Because you’re in the sky
And I’m in the earth
Because you’re in the sky
And I’m in the earth

But this time it’s different
I swear to god
The sun’s exploding within my arms
And it’s getting warmer
And I can see that the sun
Is truly in love with me

Because you and I were blown away
By love and hope for better days
You and I were blown away

9. The Earth and the Sun

“Almost a total repeat of SOL SOLIS lyrically, this song takes the entire theme of the earth and sun and elevates it to a near spiritual level…if Sol Solis represented the body/heart, the physical self crying out for “the sun”, then this song is no doubt the spirit/soul crying out for the same…it really captures the title and the essence of this album, this is truly the moment of pneuma and the moment this album earns the word as title…it’s a haunting, and gorgeous, moving to the heart and spirit like dreams or powerful memories would be IF they could somehow be converted into the realm of music itself.  One of my favorites.

LYRICS:

Take your hands away from your face
So I can see everything you are
And everything you’ve been to me
Something you don’t wanna be
Something you don’t wanna be

You, you’re like the sun
And I am earth
Together we’re one
But someday your fire will die
And I’ll grow cold without sunlight
And I will die, baby
And I will freeze

10. Ode We Will Bury Ourselves

“I love how this song takes the themes of all previous songs; growing, trees, sun, earth, sky and evolves them into a beautiful message, a song of hope and sincere desire toward “God” to simply let this love BE, to allow it to grow and be a relationship of real fruition. (“And fertilize the earth we walk”) there are no more clouds here to block the light, just the sun and the earth, and the singing trees at the very end…. and it’s so rewarding after this long and painful journey.”

“I love how it ends in human voices, and then when the album starts over again, it’s human voices that begin it again…in breaths. The breaths of life. Pneuma.”

LYRICS:

God, you took a lot from me
I don’t ask for much
Just a sense of security
And all I ever wanted
Was a minute of your time

Someday the trees will sing
A song of hope to bring
A lovely winter morning
Where you and I are growing
Into an apple tree
Where the sun will kiss our face
And we will grow

Just fall away
Just let it go
For you, I’d run away
Because you are something to
Something to hold on to
A fault in the crust I fell through
You live, you learn, you love
Nothing will change what I’m made of

I’m in the earth
It’s where you will find me

Just fall away
Just let it go
For you, I’d run away
I’d run away

And hopefully God will find
A reason for our love to bleed
And fertilize the earth we walk
From fragile seeds

God, you took a lot from me
I don’t ask for much
Just a sense of security
And all I ever wanted
Was a minute of your time

Just fall away
I’d run away
I’d run away

Someday the, the trees will sing, Hallelujah!
And we’ll bury our souls in the ground, Hallelujah!
And I’m in the earth, and you’re in the sky, Hallelujah!
And nothing will change what you are, Hallelujah!
And someday the, the trees will sing
